OVERVIEW

Mangystau Region is a region of Western Kazakhstan located on the Eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Its capital is Aktau, which means “white mountain” in Kazakh, which may be due to its cliffs that overlook the Caspian. From 1964 to 1991 city was known as Shevchenko.

Urochishche Boszhira is one of the most beautiful places in Kazakhstan. It is a whole range of rock formations of various sizes and shapes located at the bottom of a huge canyon in the western part of the Ustyurt plateau on the Mangyshlak peninsula in Mangystau region of southwestern Kazakhstan.

Boszhira is huge. It will take more than one day to explore it. The weather in Mangyshlak is harsh and unpredictable. The best time to travel to Boszhira is summer. From autumn to mid-spring it often rains here washing out already bad roads

ITINERARY

DAY 1 ARRIVAL AND CITY TOUR IN AKTAU

Meet in the airport

Transfer to hotel. Rest time. Lunch in hotel

Excursion “The Sea Gates of Kazakhstan”. The excursion program includes sightseeing tour of the city of Aktau, the most interesting and memorable places in the city, an acquaintance with the history, culture and memorial monuments of the city.

Visit Mangystau Regional Museum of Local History, where there are exhibition halls with the best exhibits in history, nature and culture, archeology, ethnography of the region. Excursion around the museum

Sea trip on a sailing catamaran – 1 hour

Walk along the new embankment to the Rock Trail (SkalnayaTropa)

DAY 2 ZHYGYLGAN CANYON

Depart to the tour: AKTAU CITY – ZHYGYLGAN CANYON – KENTY-BABA MAUSOLEUM – UNDERGROUND MOSQUE SULTAN EPE – SHAKPAK ATA MOSQUE – KAPAM SAI CANYON

ZHYGYLGAN – Excursion with a visit to the huge canyon Zhygylgan in the form of a regular circle with a diameter of up to 10 km, one edge of which goes into the sea, formed as a result of the strongest landslide processes.

UNDERGROUND MOSQUE SULTAN EPE- is a monument of history and culture of the IX-XII century, on the territory of which there is a well with fresh water, and according to the legends this well has some healing feature.

UNDERGROUND SHAKPAK ATA MOSQUE – the Temple of the Sun in antiquity, and now one of the most beautiful mosques in Mangistau – Shakpakata is a monument of history and culture of the 10th century

THE VALLEY OF GLOBULAR STONE CONCRETIONS TORISH – Mysterious valley, dotted with huge stone balls, having various fantastic forms. Walk through the valley, taking pictures among the bizarre forms of stone concretions.

THE MOUNTAIN IS THE REMAINS OF SHERKALA – a natural object with one of the survey points looking like a giant yurt.

SHUMANAY – AIRAKTY VALLEY – excursion along the valley, in the center of which towering mountain remains are like majestic castles of the Middle Ages and behind each turn a new transformation of rock massifs. The grandeur of scale and unique color awakens the imagination and causes delight. The system of small remnant mountains is known among the local population under the name of Airacty-Shomanay. Along the sides of Mount Ayrakta on blocks of chalky rock you can see scratched drawings, called by one of the researchers “Steppe Symphonies”.

JYLSHY– Walk along Chalky Canyon. Water and wind whimsically walled the walls of the channel with grottos, gutters and honeycombs

ETHNOAUL “KOGEZ” – Visit to the ethnographic village “Kogez” located 14 km from the village Shetpe. On the territory of the ethnographic village Tourists will be able to touch the traditions of hospitality of the Kazakh people. Excursion “Under the arch of the Kazakh yurt”.

DAY 4 ZHARMISH CANYON - BLACK CANYON

THE КАRATAU MOUNTAINS (CANYONS OF COLORED CLAYS) – In the morning the departure to the area of the ridges of Karatau (black mountains). Arrival in the canyons of multi-colored clays, in which you will take a walk along the colored canyon, where behind each turn opens new types of colored rocks, having incredible shapes and color. Contrast color canyon is a canyon formed by a fantastic heap of black rocks.

SOR TUZBAIR – panorama of the fantastic extravaganza of the chinks of the Ustyurt plateau. In this place, the chinky plateau of Ustyurt is abruptly cut off by a cascade of clayey – calcareous and chalky steps, at the base of which lies a vast salt marsh, called sor

DAY 5 BOZZHIRA VALLEY

BEKET ATA UNDERGROUND MOSQUE – takes the special place in the Muslim world. It is a holy place, which is in the same row as the most important buries of Muhammad and Kozhahmet. All year round pilgrims are coming here to open their souls. People assure that even one mention of the name Beket Ata in the talk is able to avert trouble, and a prayer in the mosque is capable to make a miracle. Beket Ata is also known in the Muslim world as a Predictor and a prophet, to whom the book of Genesis opened.

THE VALLEY OF BOZZHIRA is a picturesque precipice of the Ustyurt plateau, decorated with chalky mountains and spiers of aboriginal origin.Surrounded by fantastic landscapes, you can fully experience the greatness of nature.

DAY 6 MOUNTAIN BOKTY

MOUNTAIN BOKTY – On a flat surface takyra Lonely Mountain rises in the shape of a pyramid. The height of this mountain is more than 150 m.

KYZYLKUP –The red colours of the chalk is what truly makes this area stand out. There are blurred chalk skylines with red layers next to the mountain. The local Kazakhs call it Kyzylkup.

DAY 7 TYIESU SANDY DUNES - THE CITY OF AKTAU

UNDERGROUND MOSQUE SHOPAN ATA – Visit to the underground mosque of the holy elder Shopanata, according to the legend of the disciple of the great Khodja Ahmed Yassawi, the famous Sufi poet, mystic and philosopher. Acquaintance with a variety of necropolises on the territory of the mosque and with traditional rituals, accepted in holy places.

TYIESU SANDY DUNES – SENEK NECROPOLIS (XVII—XX CENTURIES) – Our road is through the sand dunes Tujesu near of the Senek village. Short stop to make photos.
